Thailand declares war on the Internet!-FACT exclusive

Details are still sketchy but BBC News has reported that Thailand has blocked 4,818 new websites today. Thailand has declared war on the Internet.
It is still unclear whether this Internet censorship has been carried out by the ICT ministry, the Army’s new cyber division, the Royal Thai Police or the Internet “war room” in planning stages in the Thai Senate or a combination of several state agencies.
However, the web censorship appears to have been consolidated under the website Protect the King hosted at Thailand’s Parliament: http://www.protecttheking.net/ with the email address: protecttheking@parliament.go.th. Government would like us to believe that the anti-lèse–majesté movement comes from the people when, if fact, it is being imposed from the top down.
The express purpose of the government website appears to be to encourage people to turn in the names of people and websites they believe are committing lèse-majesté! In other words, a nation of Thais turning in their neighbours for criminal charges carrying a sentence of 15 years (at least until the Democrats succeed in raising that to 25 years).
It was inconceivable that 2,703 persons unknown created separate web pages with the intent to defame and insult Thailand’s monarchy!
Now Thai government wants us to believe there 7,521 persons in the world who care enough about Thai monarchy to express their disrespect?!?
Freedom Against Censorship Thailand (FACT) demands:
1) Show us the blocklist!
2) Show us the court orders.
Under Thailand’s Computer-Related Crimes Act 2007, it is illegal to block any website without court order. 4,818 websites blocked in one day must need a lot of rubber stamps!

Since the beginning of this year the ICT ministry has applied to the court to block 4,818 URLs; 4,683 relate to the monarchy; 98 are porn sites and 37 are false advertising [relating to the online sale of “morning after pills” banned in Thailand].
Thai government continues to shoot itself in the foot over the issue of lèse-majesté. Thais are not being allowed any discussion or opinion if it happens to mention the King.
We think this “war on lese majeste” will backfire on Thai government…and soon! The fundamentalist lèse-majesté police are killing the monarchy to save it and bringing His Majesty and the Royals into the deepest disrepute.

War on rationality might be more descriptive. I note that the website page, http://www.protecttheking.net/co_commit.html, contains an unlinked organization chart titled Working Group, Subcommittee for Protecting and Suppressing Lese Majeste Websites and Acts. The four units in the chart are Law, Coordination, PR & ICT. The site’s main page provides links to various aspects of the effort, one being law. Clicking on it reveals a set of legal provisions to be used, including one that prescribes punishment for those committing lese majeste outside the kingdom!I will be translating this entire section today and double-checking, but it is scary! Note that this website was registered in September 2008, for one year only – which will certainly be extended.
Thailand has indicated it wants to fight, and unfortunately the consequences will be disruptive and destructive. A lot of people will not put their muscle into tripping up this little piece of Nazi-era censorship.
This law section also prescribes that if the consequences of the criminal act cited (LM in this case) are such that they are expected to have an impact within the kingdom, then it shall be held that the act occurred inside the kingdom!

I have draft translated this today, but because of its Bush-like far-reaching consequences, felt it should appear ASAP for all to read. Thailand is claiming sovereignty beyond its borders.

Section 5 Any offense, or any part thereof, that was committed in the kingdom, whereby the consequence of the offense that was committed in the kingdom and whereby the offender (s) intended that such a result occur in the kingdom, or whereby the characteristics of the action consequences ought to occur in the kingdom, or are likely to be expected to have results occurring in the kingdom, shall be deemed to be an offense within the kingdom.

Where there are any preparations or attempts to prepare which are prescribed under the Criminal Code aa offenses, even though such acts occurred outside the kingdom, should the actions be carried out continuously to where they have become offenses and consequences will occur within the kingdom, it shall be deemed that the preparations or attempts to act have been committed within the kingdom.
