Stand up for sitting down!

Chotisak Onsoong, a prominent political activist and his friend were harassed by private citizen Nawamin Witayakul who accused them of lese majeste under article 112 of the Criminal Code.

The article says whoever insults or expresses vengeance to the King, Queen, crown prince and princesses, or the regent will be jailed from three years up to fifteen years. Chotisak and friend expressed their rights to freedom of expression by sitting down during the Royal anthem preceding a film. This happened on 20 September 2007.

Chotisak will appear before the police to receive the charge on Tuesday 22 April 2008, at 1.00 pm, at the Pathumwan Police Station.
There will be a statement read by Mr. Chotisak, and support activities by his friends.

Chotisak Onsoong is a prominent political and human rights activist in Thailand. During 2001-2003, he was active as the Committee Member and consecutively the Under Secretary-General of the Students Federation of Thailand (SFT), a broad-based network of active student groups. He later served as the editor of the QUESTIONMARK political magazine and a coordinator of the Student Activity Information Resource (SAIR).

Chotisak was pushed into the spotlight after the 19 September 2006 military coup d’etat after leading the 19 September Network against the Coup as the coordinator. Currently he is a secretary to the 19 September Network against the Coup.
