To celebrate International Women’s Day, Newsweek chooses notables from around the world. This year’s list features fearless women. From Thailand, our first woman prime minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, was chosen along with only one other, founding FACT signer and webmaster of Thailand’s independent online news media, Prachatai, Chiranuch Premchaiporn.
There is, however, some difference between them. Chiranuch is awaiting a verdict for lèse majesté under a draconian Computer Crimes Act which could see her sentenced to 50 years in prison for nothing more than other people’s anonymous comments made to Prachatai’s webboard.
We can’t speak for the “fearlessness” of many of the various politicians, entertainers and businesswomen included on this year’s list. But we know Chiranuch to be a tireless advocate for justice and against censorship.
