Visit to Da Torpedo

Prachatai: July 31, 2009

On July 30, a group of activists visited Daranee Charnchoengsilapakul at Klong Prem prison, marking the 1st anAbout 20 activists gathered at the Women’s Detention Centre inside the Klong Prem Prison.  According to the rules, only 5 of them were allowed to meet Daranee for 15 minutes.

Daranee came out to meet the visitors with a smiling face.  Talking through a microphone, she told them that life inside was as good as it got, although she had some hassles with some other inmates.

However, she suffers from a molar abscess, which has been a chronic health problem, and she wants the prison to let her receive proper treatment outside.  Before she was arrested on July 22 last year, she had regularly been to Phra Mongkut Klao Hospital.  She needs medication to reduce the pain and inflammation.

She said that she would be delighted for anybody to write her a letter to give her moral support.

She was due to appear in court for the lèse majesté case again on Aug 5.

The activists collected a sum of 3,200 baht, which was deposited in the accounts of Daranee and Bunyuen Prasertying, a convict who was sentenced to 6 years in prison for lèse majesté.

The activists also brought dozens of books and magazines to donate to the prison’s library at the request of Daranee who had said there were just a few books in the library for the inmates to read.  The books and magazines were screened by the prison’s staff, as political content was forbidden.

Next, the activists plan to visit Suwicha Thakor who was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for lèse majesté.

Those who wish to write to Daranee are encouraged to write letters of support to the following address:

Daranee Charnchoengsilapakul, Room 1/3 Petch Building, Women’s Detention Centre, Klong Prem Central Prison, Ngamwongwan Rd, Lad Yao, Chatuchak, Bangkok

Note: Letters should have no political content.
