Doctor arrested over rumour-mongering

The Central Investigation Bureau has arrested another person on charges of being involved in spreading rumours about His Majesty the King’s health that caused the stock market to plunge last month.

Thassaporn Rattawongsa, 41, a doctor at Thon Buri Hospital, was arrested by the CIB’s Hi-Tech Crime Centre at her flat in Phaya Thai district yesterday.

She was charged with violating Section 14 of the Computer Offences Act for posting inaccurate information which threatens national security, according to CIB chief Tha-ngai Prasasjaksatru.

She accepted the charge of posting the false information about the King’s health on the internet under the name “mom”, according to Pol Lt Gen Tha-ngai. But she denied being involved in the stock market.

Police also seized her notebook computer and other documents as evidence.

Dr Thassaporn is the fourth person to have been arrested on the same charge.

Somjate Itthiworakul, 38, was detained in Chon Buri’s Bang Lamung district on Nov 3. Thiranant Wipuchanin, 43, a former executive director of UBS Securities (Thailand), was arrested at Suvarnabhumi airport after returning from Vienna on Nov 1. Katha Pajajiriyapong, 37, a marketing executive of KT Zmico Securities, was also nabbed on Silom Road on Nov 1.
